The house filled with people who came to console. Everyone knew Abba. At some point everyone in the community had a question to ask a professional, someone who understood the issue and answered pleasantly. Everyone in the area had enjoyed his smile and good middot. Now, after his passing, they all came to comfort the bereaved family.

When they entered the door, the same scenario repeated itself time and again: their eyes opened wider;  their jaws dropped.  How is it possible that his house looked this way?...

Another person entered. He looked around; and his eyes traveled from the simple metal stand which took the place of the bookcase in the living room; to the walls which had not been painted for many a moon; to the doors which had, a long time ago, seen better days. In this house, there was no sign of wealth or even of a decent standard of living. This was a house of poverty, such as one sees only at times few and far between.

I myself had come to consult with him…I'd bought an apartment, and only afterwards realized I'd been "taken for a ride." The apartment had problems I'd not known about. R' Bleich was my friend; he'd advised me what to do and faithfully guided me every step of the way. I never dreamed that while I brought him into a nice new apartment, his own was such a disaster…My friend, who'd also come to console, related his own experience, in which the niftar  had advised him and guided him through a legal issue.

"Did you pay him?" I asked. My friend paled. "No…It never occurred to me…He was my friend…I'd already paid a huge sum for a different lawyer. " Another man chimed in and said, "I wonder who DID pay him…I also had a similar story; I signed on a contract with the lawyer of the sellers, but I needed legal advice. He gave me all the help in the world, but he didn't ask for money and I didn't pay him…I wonder what he lived on…"

It turns out that he gave legal counsel without asking for payment. Those few who did pay, didn't pay much, as he didn't have the heart to take much from anyone. "He didn't receive support even for the holidays," said the gabbai tzedakah.  "We thought he was a person of means…after all, he was a lawyer. Who would have imagined these conditions?...He never asked for support…"

This was his life's motto: Help everyone, but don't trouble them to help you. Even when he was released from the hospital, in the last weeks of his life when he could barely stand on his feet, and he didn't have enough money for a taxi home, he still didn't ask for money from anyone to get home…

Within his family circle, the story repeated itself: he was a very devoted father who gave to his children as much as he could; even during the torturous period of his illness he continued to care for them. All the worries of the family were on his shoulders: the day after his petirah, Mrs. Bleich asked his brother, "Maybe you know the number of our bank account?" He bore the whole financial burden alone.

Years ago his only daughter was born prematurely, weighing in at less than two pounds. The doctors didn't give her a chance, but he fought like a lion for her life. She was hospitalized for half a year, and on a respirator at home for six years, until she stabilized. Then the battle started for the quality of her life: Even in the last weeks of his own life, when he was already on crutches, he traveled with this daughter to the hospital to arrange a complicated spinal operation for her…He investigated and collected the information; he signed the forms; he accompanied her to the operating room himself. He was just skin and bones, but didn't cease to worry about and care for his family, and help in whatever way he could.

Now his family is left alone. The loss is overwhelming. Their father was the pillar of their home, its heart, its soul. They bear their pain, and their difficult financial situation in silence, as did their father zt"l, but what can we do for them?

How can we leave them alone? How can we provide them with what they need? How can we play our part in this tragedy, and alleviate their burden somewhat? How can we sleep peacefully at night, knowing that this Jewish home has suffered such a stunning blow? We need to do whatever we can for them.
